Having an electric bike is great! It’s convenient, efficient, and has a lot of benefits. Ebikes have improved over the years as new technology is constantly developed, but it seems that no matter how advanced the latest innovation is, having a bit more range would be better.

Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do to improve the range of your ebike. Of course you can upgrade the parts, but simple things you can change like how you ride can make a huge impact. These tips can help you get the most out of your ebike.

8 Ways to Increase Your Ebike’s Range

  1. Pedal more while you accelerate. Your ebike is still a bike. Yes, it has electronic components but it still has functional pedals. Acceleration consumes a lot of battery power on your ebike, and pedaling for even just a few seconds as you accelerate cuts on the energy usage by half.

When you’re in a lot of stop and go traffic, it’s best to pedal yourself to get going before accelerating and letting the motor take over. You’ll save battery charge and increase your range.
  2. Go easy on the throttle. Part of an ebike’s charm is its ability to do the work for you. While it’s fun to go on full throttle mode, it uses more energy and your battery will run out of juice much faster. Instead, ease into the throttle and accelerate slowly. Your battery will consume less power, leaving more energy for a longer ride.
  3. Try coasting. Coasting is a simple yet effective way to increase ebike range. When you’re approaching a stop light or obstruction, release the throttle in advance to coast to a stop. Riding at full speed and pulling the brakes at the last second wastes precious battery energy.
  4. Slow down and enjoy the ride. We already covered that using the throttle or relying heavily on your ebike to get you moving consumes energy. But were you aware that speed is also a significant aspect in power consumption?

If you’re not in a hurry, try slowing down a bit. Doing so even for just a couple of miles per hour greatly affects your ebike range.
  5. Go on a different route. It’s much easier to ride on a flat road than a slope. Riding on a flat road uses less energy than if you’re passing on an uphill slope. It might take you twice as long to get where you’re going but it will save you more battery charge which can be useful later.
  6. Use a lower setting on your pedal assist. Seems like a simple solution, but with most ebikes it will make a big difference. If your ebike has the capability (like the Boogie Cruiser) to show you the exact amount of current being consumed while you are pedaling, you may find at a lower pedal assist you are not using the battery at all.  It’s a great way to challenge yourself and get fitter as well.
  7. Invest in a bigger battery. If your current ebike battery doesn’t have enough power to last your entire ride, you may need a larger capacity battery. A larger battery means bigger range, making up for longer rides. Not only will you increase ebike range, you’ll also have a spare battery which can be useful for extra long commutes or day trips.
  8. Maintain your ebike. Like any other vehicle, you would get the most out of your ebike with regular maintenance. The drivetrain and tires have the most friction and it’s hindering your quest for mileage! Reduce the friction by using a chain lube. If you use your ebike regularly, you should do it once a month. Your chain and gears will be in optimal condition, allowing you to squeeze in more miles.

For your tires, always check if they’re properly inflated. Follow the maximum pressure indicated on the sidewall of the tires. Under-inflated tires cause more rolling resistance with the ground which increases the required energy to move.

Increasing your Ebike’s Range

Let’s say you’re on your way home but your ebike battery is at 20%. Use a combination of the tips we listed above and you’ll be able to prolong your ebike’s power to get you home.

Whatever circumstance you encounter, these tricks will be useful to get you the mileage you need from your battery.

Kathy,
We are going to be selling a really nice Hollywood rack for 2" receivers. If looking for a rack, make sure it can handle the weight and holds the bike in some way other than a cross bar.

More questions? Just give us a ring, we are here to help!
