10 Ebike Effects to the Environment

10 Ebike Effects to the Environment

It should come as no surprise that the environment is a concern for everyone…. especially all of us living in it. We have been consuming too much, populating too quickly, and relying on fossil fuels to power our way of life.

The concept of environmental Stewardship means you can make a difference in the world by thoughtfully making intentional choices to reduce, reuse and recycle every day. There are plenty of ways to help the environment that won't force you to leave behind all of your material comforts.

Riding an electric bike instead of taking your car for short trips or running errands is one way to go about it. Ebikes are great for the environment. They have no emissions, have a much lower carbon footprint, and are generally cheaper to ride than cars.

Electric bikes are ushering in a new era. Obstacles that used to be difficult for riders are now considerably easier to overcome because of the integration of a motor and batteries – referred to jointly as the 'drive system.' People can travel further, for longer periods of time, and with considerably less effort when using an electric bike.

According to a recent study, ebikes can play a major role in lowering carbon emissions in cities. The study claims that if only 15% of urban transportation miles were traveled by e-bike, carbon emissions could be cut by 12%.

10 Environmental Impacts of Electric Bikes

  1. Zero emissions
There are no emissions from electric bikes because they do not use any gasoline when in use and instead rely on a battery. As a result, there is less pollution in the air, as well as less greenhouse gases and particulates. Your immune system, as well as the environment, will be healthier. Everyone benefits from this.
  2. Reduced reliance on fossil-fuel-powered transportation
As electric bikes gain in popularity, so do the number of people choosing to ride instead of drive. This is good news for the environment, as less fossil fuel gets burned and fewer cars on the road means cleaner air and a healthier planet.
  3. Longer lasting batteries
If you take care of them properly, electric bikes can last a long time. The battery is a large component that can fail, and it also happens to be the most carbon-intensive item. You may further lower your carbon footprint by buying an ebike with a powerful battery from a reliable maker and taking care of it.

Remember that cutting down on consumption is the key to a sustainable lifestyle. Longer lasting higher quality items decrease the need to replace.
  4. Off-peak Charging
While many people charge their electric bikes at off-peak hours because it is cheaper, they may be unaware of the positive impact they are having on the environment.

As more people use electric-based transportation, the demand for electricity will increase as well. When everybody wants to charge at once, more electricity will be needed to meet the demands from all the users.

Rather than causing strain on the electricity grid, why not charge your bike at night when renewable energy sources are most active? Since there's plenty of extra energy available, you'll be able to get a full charge without affecting the grid or taking away from production.
  5. Energy Efficient
Engines that run on fossil fuels are notoriously inefficient at capturing energy, with just 20-30% being utilized to move the wheels. Electric motors, which include electric bikes and cars, use energy far more efficiently, capturing approximately 80-90 percent of the stored energy.

Electric bikes use about 1.02 kWh per 100 miles, or about 150 watts per hour for the average rider. This is less power than a washing machine or LCD TV uses per hour. Your electric bike is more efficient than household appliances—how’s that for a fun fact?
  6. Easy to Transport
E-bikes are so versatile that you can take them anywhere. Rather than flying somewhere and renting a car or a bike, take public transportation, or carpool with someone who has a car, and bring your e-bike with you. Lots of gorgeous tourist destinations—like America’s national parks or most European cities—are best experienced by bike.
  7. Easier on the Roads
Cars can cause quite a bit of damage to streets, which need to be repaired. This extra work creates extra emissions. We can avoid this problem by taking better care of the roads.

E-bikes weigh much less than cars and vans, so they take less of a toll on roads and are incredibly easy to use. They also create less congestion in cities because fewer people drive them.

In the future, as more and more people choose to walk, bike, or use public transportation, it is possible that the road surfaces of entire cities could be reduced, since paved roads are just as polluting as cars.
  8. Healthier Humans
Electric bikes will potentially save you money and help you live a healthier life. They make it easier to get around town and provide a low-impact way to increase cardiovascular output and reduce the risk of heart disease. They also allow you to spend more time living your life and less time at the doctor's office, which will lower your overall carbon footprint. Fewer visits to the hospital mean fewer resources used.

That’s right: not only does an electric bike help the environment by eliminating the need for gasoline—no new bike lanes needed!—but it also promotes physical activity and a healthier lifestyle.
  9. More Sustainable
An electric bike lets you run on clean energy—the electricity you use is in part sourced from wind, solar, or hydroelectric power plants. Some people even charge their electric bikes using their own solar panels or other green energy sources instead of a power grid. This way they can help save the environment and reduce pollution.
  10. Reduced Carbon Footprint
Biking instead of driving can help you reduce your carbon footprint by 84 percent. That’s really impressive! However, it’s important to note that there may be some unavoidable CO2 emissions when using an e-bike – but there are also some simple ways in which you can reduce this with a little extra knowledge and good habits.

Are you willing to make a change?

Unless we give up moving,  there isn't much we can do to keep our Earth from harm. If we don’t act as stewards of the world, who will do it?

We can make a difference—we just have to cut back on our emissions. Drive less, use fewer fossil fuels and consume less energy in general.

Of course, that doesn’t mean we need to stop using technology altogether. Technology is a big part of our culture now, and it can be really useful. Let’s make the most of it.

Byron, you sure can. Our bike has pedal assist 1-5 and 0. In 0 the bike will not help you at all. In most cases, pedal assist is better because it helps only when you need it. Most of the time the effort is all yours.

Want to get smarter. Can I use an electric bike, as a pedal bike. I.e. no electricity?
Using pedals, when does electric kick in? Is it automatic?
Where can I find information about your e bike?
