The leaves are turning and the air is chilly but that shouldn’t stop you from riding your ebike. Even though it's the off-season, there are still some fantastic rides to be had. Don't pass up the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery and the colder weather autumn brings. We have compiled some of the best places to ride your bike in the fall.
Lake Champlain Bikeways, Multi-State
This biking trail is best visited between late September and mid-October. Autumn is the ideal time to visit New England, and there's no better way to view it than on the 1,600-mile Lake Champlain Bikeways, which carry riders through Vermont, upstate New York, and into Quebec. If biking becomes too tiring, take the ferries.
Katy Trail, Missouri
This mostly flat path, not to be mistaken with the one in Dallas, follows the Missouri River for a considerable portion of the trail, providing relaxing water scenery. If you're feeling adventurous, visit one of the many wineries along the "Missouri Weinstrasse," which is German for "wine road."\
Cape Cod Train, Massachusetts
Cape Cod isn't just for summer; the region's huge cycling track is also a terrific site to see autumn foliage. The trail, which follows an old railroad line, is mostly paved, making it a more pleasant ride. Treks to beaches, wetlands, and woodlands are among the offshoots.
Kebler Pass, Colorado
The Northeast isn't the only part of the country where the leaves change color. Kebler Pass, located in the Centennial State, allows cyclists to admire the majestic aspen trees as their leaves change a brilliant gold hue among the West Elk Mountains. This trail, like the others, follows a railroad path, but the surface varies between gravel and asphalt. Please keep in mind that the trail will be closed for the winter season beginning in November.
Shenandoah Valley, Virginia
One of Virginia's most well-known bike trails runs through the picturesque Shenandoah Valley, making it a must-see riding destination, especially in the fall—so much so that there's even an event dedicated to pedaling among the golden leaves. The Shenandoah Fall Foliage Bike Festival, which takes place from October 14 to 16, has routes for both hardcore bikers and fun and easy family rides.
Kitsap Peninsula, Washington
Head to Puget Sound and ride along the Kitsap Peninsula path for a taste of fall foliage in the Pacific Northwest. While the area’s annual bike ride, the Kitsap Color Classic has already passed, you can still replicate the route yourself.
Ohio to Erie Trail
This bike path takes a picturesque route through Ohio, passing through the state's major "C" cities of Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland. It usually travels off-road, so there will be no traffic delays along the trip. While trekking through attractive tiny villages, you can pick and select your starting spots.
Great Allegheny Passage, Multi-State
The enormous 150-mile trail connects Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, and Virginia by utilizing former railroad routes. Visit the numerous tiny towns along the way, especially Confluence, Pennsylvania, during its annual Pumpkinfest. Make a point of passing via the Pinkerton High Bridge in Pennsylvania, which provides spectacular views of the forest below.
Aside from the spectacular fall tree display, what distinguishes Acadia is its network of carriage roads that lay the groundwork for the trail. These roads were designed specifically for Maine's climate and to blend in with the state's surroundings.
Farmington Canal Heritage Trail, Connecticut and Massachusetts
There are remnants of the trail's former canal past, particularly at Cheshire, Massachusetts, where the home of a lock keeper (who maintained the waterway) has been restored and turned into a museum. Sleeping Giant, the enormous high-rise park, may be seen in the smaller state.
Virginia Creeper Trail, Virginia
The Virginia Creeper, named for the train route, is the state's most beautiful trail. The road follows the Blue Ridge Mountains' magnificent vistas and brilliant trees, and allows riders to legally travel to open private estates, providing colorful insights into rarely seen locations. Abington even has an old train station to commemorate its history.
Walkway Over the Hudson, New York
Away from the hustle and bustle of New York City, cyclists may ride over the bridge across the Hudson River for picture-perfect sights of the river's fire-colored trees in all directions. The walkway connects the towns of Poughkeepsie and Highland.
Keep your ebike in top shape to prevent encountering problems during your ride.
As always, check in with the local area before planning your trip. Ebike regulations vary from state to state and there may be special rules in place during the pandemic.
